Marking a resonant start to the new year, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria welcomed over 400 people—artists, patrons, community members, and more—to celebrate a new season of exhibitions on January 16, 2026.

The evening offered an opportunity for shared experience of the current exhibitions, showing how artists across time and place use a wide range of artistic mediums to not only represent  the world, but also to transform how we perceive it.

The celebration began with a welcome by Diane Sam of the Songhees Nation, grounding the opening, in the ancestral lineage of the land followed by critical insights by the curators into the season’s three exhibitions, ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ‘ਚ ਤਰੇੜ | sheeshe ‘ch thareṛ | a crack in the mirror, Fifty Shades of Ink: Ink Paintings from the AGGV Collection, and Dangerous Beauty: The Prints of Albrecht Dürer, drawing together historical and contemporary art practices. The atmosphere was further elevated by the sonic landscapes of DJ Nova Jade.

For those unable to attend the celebration, current exhibitions at the AGGV offer a rigorous look at materiality, identity, and the sublime. These exhibitions remain on view through the spring of 2026.

Following the momentum of the Winter Exhibition Celebration, we look forward to hosting the community for the upcoming Summer Exhibition Celebration on Friday, June 5, 2026 to launch the summer season of exhibitions at the Gallery. This free public event promises continued inquiry into the many ways artists are interpreting and engaging with the world. We look forward to sharing further details as a new season of inspiration unfolds.
