Being “in your element” is when you feel at ease or content performing an activity when you believe your talents are serving you. It’s also a state where your skills align with what you are doing, leading to a sense of fulfillment.
These artists share this state of being and each reflected on what it means to be “in your element.”
“In My Element” is a return to where I feel most alive—where colour, emotion, and memory converge. Watercolour allows me to move between softness and intensity, capturing moods that words often fail to express. Each piece is rooted in personal experience, shaped by joy, grief, and quiet reflection. This body of work is not just about what I see, but what I feel. It’s a visual diary of moments that moved me, transformed me, and sometimes broke me open. Through each brushstroke, I invite the viewer into that emotional landscape—to feel, to pause, and perhaps to remember something of their own.

“During the last few years, the majority of my sculpture work has been in papier mache and, though my process requires more time than clay work, I enjoy the flexibility it affords in incorporating various found materials. As well this technique so readily, allows me turn each form in space in the process for a deeper understanding of the form. In shifting to working in a new medium it has also refreshed the creative process; discovering new possibilities and facing new challenges brings us back to why I was originally drawn to making art in the first place.”
– Leonard Butt

“As an abstract painter, I love conveying energy and emotion through different mediums, with acrylic paint being my favourite. My art often mirrors nature’s transformations, personal memories, and current events, using lines and shapes layered in a meditative process. Acrylics help me quickly build each layer and seamlessly move forward. I hope my paintings create a deep bond between my soul and the world, ultimately resonating with viewers.”
– Etsuko Kaji-Holley

“I’m in my element in the studio, carving and printing linocuts. The work is physical and intuitive … a conversation between hand, tool, and material. Each print carries the mark of both precision and imperfection.”
