This fall, the AGGV hosted the Exhibition Opening for Beauty of Mending: Kintsugi and Beyond, curated by AGGV Curator of Asian Art, Dr. Heng Wu. Featuring the traditional craft of repairing shattered ceramics with lacquer and gold, this exhibition showcases intricately restored pieces by kintsugi artist Naoko Fukumaru. The exhibition invites visitors to witness the transformation of cracked or flawed items into exquisite works of art.

On the day of the Exhibition Opening, Fukumaru demonstrated the art of kintsugi to an intimate group of attendees. As the audience looked on, Fukumaru carefully repaired a small bowl while happily explaining the history of this centuries-old repair technique, as well as the methods involved. She captivated the audience, not only with her self-taught skill, but also with her endearing ability to naturally engage with everyone through earnest storytelling about her life, family, history, and the many reasons she became connected with this unique art form.
